BlackBerry Pearl 8120

Take the popular BlackBerry Pearl 8100, add support for Wi-Fi wireless networks, boost the camera's resolution up to 2 megapixels, and you have the BlackBerry Pearl 8120. Here are the key features you'll find on this compact smartphone.

Price and Availability

The Pearl 8120 is available in black from AT&T for $250. T-Mobile is offering the phone in black, silvery blue, dark blue, and gray for $100 (after a $100 mail-in rebate) when you sign a new two-year contract.

Design

The Pearl 8120 retains the same compact design found on the original Pearl, the 8100. It features a 2.25-inch screen and the Pearl trackball for navigation. You also get a SureType QWERTY keyboard, which puts two letters on most of the keys.

Voice and Data Access

The Pearl 8120 is a quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) world phone that also supports the 2.5G EDGE network. It does not support high-speed 3G networks, but it does include support for 802.11b/g wireless networks. That means you can get reliable high-speed data access in your home or office if you have a wireless network.

The T-Mobile version of the Pearl 8120 also lets you make voice calls over wireless networks; this can be a useful feature if you often make calls in areas where T-Mobile's cellular coverage is spotty.

Software

Unlike the newer BlackBerry phones (like the Bold or Pearl Flip), the Pearl 8100 does not include any productivity software. That means you'll have to supply your own software if you'd like to use your phone to view or edit Office documents.

Messaging

Like all BlackBerry phones, the Pearl 8120 will let you access up to 10 e-mail accounts--both business and personal--and it includes an attachment viewer. The T-Mobile version of the phone also includes access to popular instant messaging clients, like AOL's AIM, Google Talk, and Windows Live Messenger.

Camera

The 2.0-megapixel camera is a step up from the 1.3-megapixel camera found on the original BlackBerry Pearl. It includes a digital zoom, flash, and the ability to choose from three different quality levels. It also captures video clips.

Music and More

Like the original Pearl, the 8120 includes an audio and video player. You can transfer songs to the phone using a USB cable and the included Roxio software. The AT&T version of the 8120 also lets you access AT&T's mobile music store.
